Time Blocking in Practice
You can do this on your calendar, or write it in a daily planner, whatever medium you normally use. To get yourself started just follow these 5 simple steps.
Bookend your day and schedule your breaks.
Think of this as your wake up and wind down time… when do you get up and what is your morning routine? When do you normally need a break, when do you have lunch and when and how do you wind down at the end of the day. Use these timings times to structure your day.
Put your personal commitments in first.
Whether it’s a family diner or a yoga class, putting it in first gives it priority, and that helps you allocate the time around to ensure it is not an afterthought.
Set aside time for Meaningful and Shallow tasks
We usually try and cram our shallow tasks- like checking emails/communications around the rest of the things we are doing. By having dedicated pockets of time to address and deal with these tasks they are less likely to interrupt your flow the rest of the time. Schedule your meaningful tasks for times in the day when you feel you work most productively.
Add time for reactive tasks
We all have to react to things on a daily basis, yet somehow we are always surprised when things creeps up on us. Schedule time each day for the unexpected… Then when it happens it won’t throw your whole day out of whack.
Write down your daily to do list and fill it in.
Now that you have a rough daily plan… write down your to do list and schedule it!… but wait until after the next video to do this.
