Silent Whispers
Can your class pass a message around without it changing? More importantly can they do it without being allowed to talk…
This fun game helps to illustrate how difficult communication can be and how quickly a story can change.
How it works:
Split your class into groups of 5.
Ask your class to line up in their groups.
Everyone, except the line leader, should face the back of the room.
Remind everyone that they must remain silent throughout the game.
Show the line leaders a physical message – this could be head shoulders knees and toes, the funky chicken, the Macarena, whatever you fancy. Try and have at least 5 movements in your message.
The line leader then taps the person behind them on the shoulder, and they turn around. The line leader shows them the message they got from you.
Once they have passed the message on, line leaders turn back to the front and sits down.
Then the person that was shown the message has to show the person behind them and so on all the way down the line.
Once they get to the end of the line the last people shows everyone the message they got.
Did everyone get the same message?
Then reveal the message you sent…
Repeat this a few times to see how they get on. Give the teams some time to come up with strategies to help them improve their accuracy.
