We are going to have a look around the room you are in just now…. go on, have a look!
While you are doing that, just pick out a few different things in your minds as you go. Not people of course, just things. (This is not a chance to put your teacher in the bin!)
Once you have a few in mind, it is now have a go at this game yourself!
● Using items around them in the classroom, pupils can now try this exercise out themselves.
● This could be done in pairs, with each pair choosing what object to get rid of and one pupil playing the part of the person wanting to clear up, and the other pupil playing the part of the object who is trying to save themself.
● Explain to your class that the objective of the person playing the object is to not get thrown out.
● The objective of the person trying to clear out is to throw it out!
● Once pupils have finished each part they can swap over and repeat while playing the opposite characters.
● This can be repeated in the same or different pairs for as many times as you wish.
● Volunteers could share their debate/s with the class.
● If you prefer to not do pair work, you could choose an item in the class and ask your pupils to give you reasons why you cannot throw that item away.
● Pupils could also work alone and use the item as a puppet as the presenter did.
Once everyone has had a go, discuss how we can responsibly discard of unwanted items. Can hand them onto someone else, donate to charity or up-cycle? Or maybe not buy something in the first place? Reflect on why it is important not to just throw things away when we are done with them.
