The word ‘stress’ has a lot of negative associations that come with it, and whilst they’re mostly fair, stress isn’t all bad.
For starters it is totally natural, it’s built into the way we operate as human beings – so surely it must serve some sort of purpose, right? Well, yes. Sometimes.
Sometimes a little bit of stress is exactly what we need. Sometimes it’s that little bit of motivation that spurs us into action. Some people rely on it all the time, in fact. If you’ve ever left your homework to the last minute and found yourself rushing through it at break time before your next class, then you might know exactly what I’m talking about. In that small space of time you find yourself stressed out, faced with the prospect of not having any homework to hand in, and it’s in that moment of stress that motivation takes hold as you race through your homework with laser focus, at a rate of work that would never be possible in your normal, relaxed state.
Pressure can burst a pipe or pressure can make a diamond.
