We all have this chimp part of our brain, a part of us that is very instinctive and impulsive.
When faced with a situation where we have to choose between shorter-term fun and longer-term satisfaction, this part of our brain can be quite loud in trying to push for the short-term option.
Just like a real chimp, this version of us doesn’t think into the future to assess the repercussions of our actions. That’s why you might find yourself choosing to watch netflix or go out with your friends rather than getting all that homework out of the way while the topics are fresh in your head. It’s why you might end up easily getting distracted by your friend in class rather than listening to the teacher and trying to understand what they’re talking about.
This chimp part of our brain can seem like our biggest enemy sometimes, it takes us away from the actions that would lead us towards achieving our goals, getting us sidetracked by impulses and whims that, while often being fun or pleasant at the time, don’t help us in the greater scheme of things.
Our impulses are too strong for our judgement sometimes
